Welcome Lillian Grant who shares a book that inspired her– The Rum Diary.
If you’ve read any of my books you probably think my desire to write was inspired by something that involved crotch grabbing, hot kisses, panting and the exchange of more than just phone numbers, but you would be so wrong. I read that stuff. Don’t we all? Although, prior to flipping the lid of my laptop and typing my very first heading, Chapter One, I didn’t read romance, never mind erotic romance.
So, what did inspire me? When I say I never read romance I don’t mean I never read. I love books and have been devouring them since I first learned to sound out words. However, my taste is a little left field and some might think downright odd. I have increased my library to include all manner of butt spanking, panty dampening, lust filled and generally dirty books but that is not where the journey began.
My inspiration came from my favorite book of all time, The Rum Diary by Hunter S. Thompson. If you’ve read any of the works of the illustrious Doctor you will know his writing is a bit different. No need for plot or a story arc. Nothing to keep the reader interested except the style of the prose and the complete madness of the characters.
The book follows New York resident newspaper reporter Paul Kemp as he embarks on an adventure in Puerto Rico. Set in the 1950’s, Kemp takes off to the warm Caribbean to begin life as a journalist for an English language newspaper.
What the book lacks in plot it more than makes up for with people that are maniacal, violent and alcoholic, and poor Kemp soon finds himself in the midst of mayhem and madness. The story is stuffed full of weird and wonderful characters, lust, love, sex, danger, greed, excitement and so much more.
At the heart of the book are the main character’s fears about getting old and selling out and a strange romantic interest in a beautiful young woman. He first sees her on the flight to Puerto Rico where he makes a fool of himself trying to save her a seat and ends up in trouble when the flight crew decides he was beating up an old man who took the empty seat.
The description of Kemp’s antics on the plane made me laugh out loud and I had to scurry from the bookstore’s coffee shop before they asked me to leave. I love humor. I love to write comedy and I live in hope of creating wonderful characters that draw readers into their world to the point where nothing else exists as long as they are turning the pages.
